What is advanced laparoscopy?
Advanced laparoscopy is laparoscopic surgery that utilizes the latest surgical instruments and imaging devices. Laparoscopic surgery differs from traditional or open surgery in that surgeons make several small incisions (about ½ inch) in the abdominal wall and use a tiny camera to view the procedure on a TV monitor.
Laparoscopic surgery has significant benefits over traditional surgery, including:
- Less pain
- Faster recovery time
- Reduced hospital stays
- Significantly smaller scars
- Less surgical trauma
- Fewer wound infections
- Improved outcomes
Which procedures can be performed with advanced laparoscopy?
At South Bay Urology in Torrance, California, our surgeons perform:
- Laparoscopic nephrectomy
- Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy
- Laparoscopic nephroureterectomy
- Laparoscopic adrenalectomy
- Laparoscopic varicocelectomy
- Laparoscopic bladder
diverticulectomy - Laparoscopic excision of urachus
Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy and nephrectomy is the removal of part or all of a kidney through small incisions, respectively. These surgeries are most commonly performed for kidney tumors and kidney cancer. With a partial nephrectomy, only the tumor is removed, not the entire kidney. This preserves kidney function and reduces the risk of renal failure and need for hemodialysis. For this reason, we prefer and do a partial nephrectomy versus a total nephrectomy even though it is a technically more difficult surgery. Our surgeons at SBU have extensive experience with complex and large renal masses and cancers
Laparoscopic nephroureterectomy iis performed when the cancer originates from the collecting system of the kidney (the renal pelvis) or the ureter. Often, the appropriate operation is to remove the kidney and the entire length of the ureter. Advanced laparoscopy allows for consistent oncologic outcomes with a shorter recovery time versus the traditional, open approach.
Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is used to remove tumors of the adrenal glands. Your adrenal glands produce different hormones that help regulate your metabolism, blood pressure, blood sugar, immune system and other essential functions. They are situated just above each kidney. Whether for small, functional (hormone producing) masses or for larger adrenal masses, the pre-op evaluation and surgical approach are critical for attaining good outcomes. The South Bay Urology physicians are experienced at the medical and surgical management of adrenal disease.
Laparoscopic varicocelectomy is a surgical procedure that repairs varicoceles, which is swelling of veins in the scrotum. This swelling is caused by blood backing up in the veins and it can cause pain or a heavy feeling in the scrotum. It can also cause issues with fertility in men. With a laparoscopic approach, we can achieve similar surgical outcomes with a quicker recovery time versus the open approach.
