What is Prolieve?
The Prolieve System is a FDA-approved, in-office treatment for men with BPH (an enlarged prostate). BPH, or benign prostatic hyperplasia, is a noncancerous condition in which the prostate blocks the flow of urine as it moves out of the bladder. The Prolieve System was designed specifically to treat the symptoms of BPH in men who would benefit from drug or surgical therapy. If you suffer from:
- Difficulty starting urination
- Frequent, urgent needs to urinate
- A weak urine stream that may also stop and start
- Increased frequency of urination at night
- Dribbling at the end of urination
- An inability to completely empty the bladder
the Prolieve System can help!
What can I expect during treatment?
The procedure will start with the insertion of a catheter into your urethra. The microwave energy of the Prolieve System is then turned on. That energy will be transmitted to a special antenna inside the catheter. This will provide heat to your prostate in order to reduce the enlarged tissue. The catheter also uses a small balloon that will inflate within the section of the urethra close to where the prostate is located. During the 45-minute procedure, water will circulate inside the catheter and through your urethra. For your safety, the system’s computer will monitor the temperature surrounding the treatment area. If the temperature on the monitor gets too hot (around 107 degrees Fahrenheit), the system will automatically shut off.
Following the procedure, you will be able to go home immediately. However, you may need someone to drive you home.
What can I expect from the results?
