Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces or reshapes the female external genital structures.

What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces or reshapes the female external genital structures. More and more women request this procedure to alleviate the discomfort caused by a large, thick or asymmetric labia minora. This discomfort can interfere with biking, working out, wearing tight-fitting clothes and sexual intercourse. If you feel pain from the twisting and tugging of the labia or itchiness and/or irritation, you may benefit from a labiaplasty.

How can a labiaplasty help me?

The procedure aims to reduce the labia minora so that the folds don’t hang below the labia majora. Asymmetry can also be reduced when one is longer than the other and the length of both labia can be reduced so that it no longer twists or tugs. Labiaplasty is a common vaginal rejuvenation treatment that more and more women are relying on.

What can I expect during the procedure?

This procedure is done as an outpatient under either general or intravenous sedation. The trim procedure and the wedge procedure are two of the most popular types of labiaplasty. With the trim procedure, extra tissue in the labia is removed and sewn up directly. With the wedge procedure, a pie-shaped piece of tissue is removed but a natural border is maintained. Extra folds of the clitoral hood can be reduced at the same time as a labiaplasty. Absorbable sutures are used to close up the surgical wounds.

What can I expect from the results and recovery?

Labiaplasties typically result in a shorter labia minora that no longer hangs below the level of the labia majora. Most patients find relief from the twisting and tugging of their labia after surgery. Studies show a high satisfaction rate among women who have received labiaplasty surgery.

In terms of recovery, most women take a week off from work. You can resume tampon use and sexual intercourse after 6 weeks. While most of the swelling is gone after 6 weeks, mild residual swelling may take 3-6 months to fade completely.
